ANnew

ANnew is a Melbourne-based contemporary artist working across symbolic realism and expressive abstraction. Her paintings explore nature, memory and the human experience, using flowers, animals, colour and recurring symbols to give visual form to qualities such as courage, gratitude, trust, wisdom and resilience.

Art was an important part of ANnew's life from an early age. She began painting at thirteen and, despite receiving an art scholarship, ultimately followed her strength in science into medicine and a career as a surgeon. Creativity remained present in the background, but for many years there was little room for a sustained art practice.

n 2021, she returned to painting during a period when creativity became a space for healing, reflection and reconnection with herself. What began as a deeply personal and restorative practice gradually developed into a serious contemporary art practice and, ultimately, ANnew.

Her background in surgery brings an unusual perspective to her work: an understanding of anatomy and observation, but also years spent witnessing vulnerability, resilience, uncertainty and change. Rather than depicting these experiences literally, ANnew increasingly turns to the natural world as a symbolic language through which to explore them.

Her practice moves between detailed symbolic realism and the greater spontaneity of expressive abstraction. In her figurative works, carefully observed flowers and natural forms are layered with symbols and unexpected elements, often rewarding a closer look. Her abstract works explore many of the same ideas through colour, movement, texture and intuitive mark-making.

Since joining Malvern Artists' Society in 2024, ANnew's work has received a number of awards and commendations and has been selected for exhibitions in Melbourne and internationally. In December 2026, she will present her first solo exhibition, BLOOM – Human Virtues in Flower, at Malvern Artists' Society.

Across both realism and abstraction, the underlying intention remains the same: to create paintings that can first be experienced visually, then discovered more slowly — works that leave space for the viewer to bring their own memories, associations and meaning.

Artist Statement

My art is a journey into the heart of symbolic realism, where every petal, shadow and hue carries a deeper meaning. Working primarily in acrylic, I blend the precision of realism with the expressive freedom of abstraction, creating pieces that invite viewers to look beyond the obvious and discover the stories woven within.

Nature is my primary muse—flowers, plants, and organic forms become vessels for personal and universal symbolism. Many of my works are inspired by the people who have shaped me: a blue orchid for trust, honesty and calm, inspired by my late father, a Banksia for strength and perseverance inspired by my mother, a chrysanthemum cradling the spirit of motherhood, inspired by the experience of being a mother. Hidden elements—Celtic motifs, scarab beetles, or subtle gestures—invite a second look, rewarding curiosity with new layers of meaning.

Colour is my language of connection. I use bold, saturated palettes to evoke emotion and to bridge the gap between the viewer’s experience and my own. My goal is to create art that feels both intimate and universal—a visual meditation on the ties that bind us, the resilience we inherit, and the beauty found in life’s quiet details.

Through my work, I hope to offer not just images, but invitations: to pause, to reflect, and to find your own story within the colours and forms I share.
