Arching stems of Queen Anne’s lace form a delicate, protective canopy, their intricate florets suspended against an intensely luminous blue. Deep indigo and violet give way to glowing turquoise, creating a sense of depth and openness within the shelter of the flowers.
Within the flowing stems and luminous blue space, the subtle suggestion of a feminine torso emerges. Neither fully defined nor immediately apparent, this form invites reflection on the relationship between the body, vulnerability and protection — and the sanctuary we find within ourselves.
The contrast between the dark, grounding stems and the delicate, almost weightless blossoms reflects the relationship between strength and vulnerability. Sanctuary is not necessarily a place removed from the world, but a space in which we feel sufficiently protected to be vulnerable, to reflect and to grow.
A small burgundy butterfly rests quietly amongst the stems, symbolising the possibility of transformation within that safety.
Through its immersive colour, intricate botanical forms and expansive negative space, Sanctuary invites the viewer to step beyond observation and experience a moment of peace.
Part of BLOOM — Human Virtues in Flower, this work celebrates not only the sanctuary we seek for ourselves, but also the sanctuary we can create for others.
